Sam "Swash" Washburn is a fictional character in the Wild Cards series of books.

History[]

Sam and his brother, Roger, were taken on a trip to Jokertown on a fateful day when Croyd Crenson was in his "Typhoid Croyd" phase. Both their parents drew the black queen and the boys were left orphaned. Sam remained a latent for eleven years before drawing the joker, which he turned to his advantage as a public deuce. Roger likewise became a public wild carder and formed The Jokertown Boys, a quintet of wild carders all from the same orphanage, which Sam was included in as occasional backing vocalist as well as being their official cover artist.

Wild Card Traits[]

Swash has an ability to produce ink of any hue from the tips of his fingers and toes. He has sharpened fingernails forming a series of ten quill pens that he can employ with equal dexterity to write and draw with perfect photographic precision. His photographic reflexes are also present in his long prehensile lion's tail, which itself forms a convenient paint brush when the need arises.

Appearance[]

Swash is a lithe, small man with fingernails honed to a sharp Fu Manchu manicure and a long prehensile lion's tail. He keeps his nails hidden in specially designed gloves, producing them whenever he needs them for his art. His tail is usually concealed within his clothing and is only produced rarely.

Personality[]

Swash is a positive thinker and has successfully marketed his wild card as a deuce. His wry humour tends to be more evident in his art than expressed directly, and he is otherwise a polite and likeable young man.

Trivia[]

  • Swash is publicly a deuce despite having tail which he keeps concealed most of the time.
