John F.X. Black is a fictional character from the Wild Cards series of books. He was the police captain of the Jokertown Precinct in the mid 1980s.
History[]
Captain John F.X. Black was in charge of the precinct from the early 1980s to September 1986 when it was revealed that he was part of the Astronomer's Masonic conspiracy.
Mark McPherson was his predecessor as the captain of the Jokertown Precinct. McPherson was assassinated by Demise in January 1986 under orders from the Astronomer to make room for John F.X. Black to take over. Black would prove more congenial to the Masons, since he was one himself.
Black was in charge of the precinct until September 1986, when Fortunato discovered he was a Mason and killed him. His replacement was Captain Angela Ellis. His son Francis later took up a post in the NYPD, working as a police officer out of same precinct that John had worked in, not initially knowing of his father's corruption.
