World War II was the global military conflict which involved a majority of the world's nations, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. The start of the war is generally held to be September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. The US entered the war on the side of the Allies in 1941, after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The war ended in 1945 in a victory for the Allies.

Alternate History[]

World War II is the last global event unaffected by the wild card, since the alien virus would be released the next year. When the wild card virus was released over New York in 1946, people were still used to the routines of wartime, and perhaps the panic and chaos would have been even greater otherwise.

One of the greatest American heroes of World War II was Robert Tomlin, better known as Jetboy. He was the greatest fighter ace in the conflict, shooting down about 500 enemy planes and fifty ships. Other noteworthy individuals who fought on WWII were Jack Braun and Earl Sanderson, both of whom would become famous superheroic aces after the war. Jack Braun was a Sergeant in the US Army, decorated with one Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. Earl Sanderson served in the Army Air Force in the 332nd Fighter Group, an all-black unit, and was the second greatest fighter pilot after Jetboy, shooting down 53 enemy planes.
