Father Henry Obst is a fictional character from the Wild Cards series of books.

History[]

Growing up in Alabama, Henry's rebellious teenager phase got the better of him, and he was known to experiment with legal drugs and alcohol. When his wild card turned, he gained the power to turn water into wine, a trick which soon led to him being kicked out of his house and living in a room above his uncle's garage. He later successfully battled alcoholism and chose the cloth.

When Father Squid took leave of the church, Henry agreed to fill in for several weeks. He took in a wayward prostitute, not realising that she was hiding a substantial amount of stolen money and drugs. This drew him into conflict with the Mafia and the Shadow Fist Society, both trying to recover the goods, as well as a face-to-face confrontation with the ace assassin, Demise.

Wild Card Traits[]

Father Henry has the power to transmute water into wine. In his youth he learned such a fine control that he could change the liquid just as it reached his lips. In a similar manner he is able to concentrate on water being imbibed by another person and cause it to change in their mouth.

Appearance[]

Father Henry is a slightly overweight man with thick glasses. He typically wears black, with the white circular collar of a priest.

Personality[]

Father Henry is obsessive about preparation. He has been known to practice is sermons in front of a mirror in order to put on a carefully nuanced performance at mass. He has a knack of seeing the humour in any situation, sometimes smiling to himself at some inner joke that he would not dare to voice. He does tend to weave the occasional wisecrack into his sermons however.

Trivia[]

  • Although he refrains from drinking, he will use wine in his cooking.
