Bobbin is a fictional character in the Wild Cards series of books.
History[]
Bobbin grew up knowing nothing of his true parentage. All he knew was that as a joker infant he had been taken in by the jokers living on the derelict Queen Mary in London in 1948. Handsome Harry took a personal interest in the boy, giving him his name, Hugesson, and teaching him the art of tailoring, something that Bobbin took to quite well and gave purpose to the needle-like spines of bone protruding between his fingers. In later years he met the ace tailor Constance and proved to be so valuable within her business that she eventually made him a partner.
After years of sharing a deep affection with one another the pair were drawn into a socio-political upheaval when Constance revealed her ace and Bobbin, feeling betrayed, turned to the bottle and disappeared into the underbelly of London. He was found badly beaten in a skip bin after Constance appealed to Twisted Fists leader Green Man for help, and this association had them crossing paths with elements of the Fists and the Order of the Silver Helix, all hunting for the true heir to the throne of England. Jokers wanted a king who could lift them out of lives of constant persecution, claimants to the throne wanted to silence anyone who might disrupt their claim, and Bobbin for his part merely wanted to remain close to Constance and keep her safe. Initial evidence pointed to Twisted Fist terrorist Seizer being the lost heir, but after this was disproved it was discovered that Bobbin himself was the missing son of Elizabeth II that the late Queen Margaret had whispered of on her death bed.
Bobbin was quickly drawn into a plan to march on Windsor Castle. Every marginalised and persecuted minority was roped in to build the numbers, and Bobbin was to be revealed to the world as the rightful heir. Seizer, irate at the discovery that he was merely the product of an extra-marital dalliance by Prince Phillip, likewise attended the event intent on killing his half-brother, but the Green Man thwarted the attack, sacrificing his life to save Bobbin from the grenade that would have ended him. Bobbin claimed the throne in the wake of the attack, pledging to hold it for three years before abdicating to the late Queen Margaret's eldest grandchild.
